Teeth Whitening FAQs

Teeth Whitening FAQs

Patients in the Bohemia, NY area often have questions about teeth whitening that they will ask Dr. Al Berger, DDS before they begin treatment. The most common questions make a lot of sense, and you should find any of the answers you need about teeth whitening below in our Teeth Whitening FAQs:

How is teeth whitening done?

Dr. Berger and the team use special, customized trays that are molded to your mouth to do whitening treatments. They are made by lab technicians and then returned to our Oakdale, NY office. We then give you the trays and the special whitening gel and show you how to use the system at home.

You fill the trays with the gel as instructed and position them in your mouth before bedtime. After two weeks of at-home teeth whitening, you will bring the trays to our office and we do a final 1.5-hour session to complete the process.

Am I a good candidate for teeth whitening?

We like to say that the ideal candidates for teeth whitening in our office are for patients who have not enjoyed success with other methods, for those with deeper stains due to dietary options or smoking, or anyone who wants a truly effective outcome.

If you are willing to commit to using the at-home trays and then returning for the single, in-office treatment, you are a good candidate.

Is it uncomfortable or painful?

Not in the least. The teeth whitening system used in our office is a patented product that actually includes a desensitizing agent to help reduce or even eliminate any tooth sensitivity you might experience. While some patients may not be good candidates if they have damaged enamel, there is no discomfort when used properly.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Absolutely! With all of the clinical studies and research done on whitening, you can be sure that the products used are safe and effective. They will not harm your teeth or gums and will provide you with a potent method for improving the appearance of your smile.

Is there any follow-up necessary?

The system at use in our office requires only a once monthly “touch up” that you can do using your at-home trays and the gel we provide. You can even continue drinking tea, coffee or wine without reducing the effects of the treatment.
