Cosmetic Dentistry Options for Chipped Teeth

June 6, 2017 Cosmetic Dentistry

One of the things that we frequently see from first-time patients in Bluepoint is chipped teeth that have been left this way for years. Many people have chipped a tooth one evening at a bonfire or birthday party, or perhaps in a more serious incident like a car accident, and have simply left the tooth chipped over time. Often, this is due to misconceptions about what we can do to fix the tooth. In fact, we have many cosmetic dentistry options that can fix the appearance of a chipped tooth – and there are medical reasons for doing so!

Why Chipped Teeth Impact Your Health

Teeth are not one piece of bone material, the same all the way through. The outer part of a tooth is called enamel, and it protects the soft inner part called the pulp. The tooth pulp contains nerves that, if exposed by a chip, can cause major discomfort. This can not only force you to alter your healthy diet to accommodate the pain, but can also lead to poor oral hygiene, infections, and the need for a root canal. That is why fixing a chipped tooth is about more than cosmetics.

Fixing Chipped Teeth in Bluepoint

While there are several treatments cosmetic dentistry can offer for a chipped tooth, two of the most common fixes we use in Oakdale near Bluepoint are dental bonding and porcelain veneers. Dental bonding means that a tooth-colored filling will be applied to the area where the chip is, similar to the way a cavity is covered. A porcelain veneer is a more permanent solution that involves a thin shell of porcelain being affixed to the front of your tooth to cover the appearance. In some cases, both treatments may be used together.
